I began my working my new schedule this month. I've learned that the older I get, the harder it is to adjust to a different hours. I've liked the earlier hours but with my active family- all with somewhere to be- all the time- the days are never ending. Non-the-less the active downtown Waukesha continues to produce note worthy news.

Last Thursday the BID voted in their new president, Roger Igelski. He will be replacing Vicki Hekkers and her devoted service to Waukesha. Vicki, a successful business woman, wife & mom, commercial investor and downtown Waukesha resident has served the community in countless ways. I truly hope, for the city, that her heartfelt presence does not diminish. Roger has accepted the new position modestly. As a business owner and career counselor at WCTC he will not only be the new BID president but has also accepted the lead position in the Waukesha Downtown Business Association. A husband & father, Roger is also very involved with his church leadership. He is sure to contribute positively to our downtown.

I heard it would be. They warned us. I knew it was inevitable. But I was still in denial. Regardless we woke up to several inches on the ground. After my initial 'great now I need leave early for work, scrape the car, blaaa, blaaa, blaaa' and the sky began to lighten the black night leftovers, I saw that it was actually kind of... well, it was pretty.

Apparently the snow arrived around 3. It sure fell quickly because when I got up around 5:45 there was a lot on the ground already.

We had a lot of fun downtown yesterday. I noticed that the spirits were high in the community. Lots of family and friends meeting to check out some of the newer shops, tour The Clarke Hotel and watch the parade. As we sipped our hot apple cider with whipped cream-drizzled with caramel (yummy) we listened to the carolers singing across the street. What a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Another great reason to live in Waukesha. We have a great community!

At the 5 Points, we heard the familiar ringing of The Salvation Army. Not shy, I have seen them all over town. They are not the only group trying to encourage giving. Food banks are reporting that 'record numbers' of people are using them. Some of the downtown businesses are trying to help out by having bins to collect non-perishables.

Hunters are happily out in droves. They, too, can help feed the hungry by donating their meat through 'Target Hunger'. If they do, they will not need to pay butchering fees. (I think we really do make it almost impossible for anyone to be hungry in Waukesha.)

Heroin is recognized as a BIG problem in Pewaukee. The community is putting together programs to help fight this growing issue.

This is a true story of a lady I will call Liz. I first began working with Liz several years ago at one of the non-profits in Waukesha. Part of our jobs were to help empower women, whom have seen some tough times. Ironic that our educations and intense, front line positions only enabled us to begin making a whopping $9.00 an hour.

I was fortunate that I could afford to work there. I loved working with these women. Liz, however, couldn't hardly afford to work there. A young, single mom. She was willing to pick up extra hours when necessary (which was always) because she, too loved working in the field.

In here lies my point. Liz understood that she was throwing away her money on renting every month. She wanted a home for her and her little one. With pittince in savings she proceeded to see if she qualified for a home. DUH! Of Coarse she could. No credit? No savings? No problem!

And so Liz and her little one moved into their lovely home on the border of West Allis and Milwaukee. Liz is now a home owner.

Not only is Liz a home owner, but she was able to qualify to buy a NEW car. It was gorgeous! (I have to admit that I was a little jealous after driving my used little import, which is not much to look at but gets good gas mileage.) She purchased a new Toyota 2 door. One of the sporty models.

On the back of Liz's car are bumper stickers to the effect of "Feminists for Democrats", "Don't Blame Me, I Voted For Kerry"... you get the picture.

Liz found extra work this fall with the Democratic Party in Milwaukee. She emailed us, wrote us, texted us, called us, and invited us to rally's, speeches, etc... in favor of Obama and the Democratic vote. On one very somber Wednesday (for me) in November I got her final text regarding that subject. Something about her joyous victory. Now, she believed, some wisdom will be brought to the economic and social service political tables.

Liz also told me that she was facing financial crisis. No longer able to drive her beautiful supped up car she was facing foreclosure. You see it didn't take long before her affordable dream home needed a roof. She was forced to take in a roommate. Her and her daughter shared a room.

Soon after that she was given the opportunity to move into her parents home so she could take in more roommates. You see the house had now dropped its value so sharply that she owed more than she could sell it for.

Her answer. File bankruptcy and blame the Republicans. Hmmm.

You see Liz didn't get that memo regarding the progress blocked by the Democrats regarding The Community Reinvestment Act. You see in 1977, when Liz was just a lil one herself congress enacted this Act to help avoid discrimination to the poorer communities. So lovely in thought, so dangerous to our economy.

Fanny and Freddy are not looking so good. And now neither are Ford, Chrysler, and GM. Our US Lawmakers will decide in December whether or not to give them 25 BILLION dollars. Bankruptcy among the automakers. Obama will consider a pre-pack package.

Now my friend Liz is not doing so well. No longer able to teach empowerment to women due to poorly managed leadership at the non-profit, she works at George Webb. Still living with her parents and hoping a wealthy buyer will come along and offer her what she owes on her house before she files those bankruptcy papers. I feel badly for her. She really is a good hearted person.

I should encourage her. Her Robin Hood has made it to the White House. But I just don't feel like it.

Yesterday someone bought me a 'flavored' latte'. It was almost too good looking to drink. 2 shots of espresso flavored with some Carmel syrup and topped with whipped cream drizzled with caramel. Seriously???? I felt guilty enjoying it, knowing that it must be laden with sugar... but ohhhh so good.

This morning, however:

we have reports that Iran has been busy producing nuclear material. Should we be worried? Ummm, duh! It seems to be enough to produce an atom bomb.
No this is not pirates of the Caribbean, this is the pirates of Somalia. Pirates are seizing sea vessels off the coast of Somalia.
Here is the list of nominations sent to the senate.
Waukesha's City Budget was passes this week. This year you could say that officials learned their lessons from last years marathon session of 9 1/2 hours. They divided and conquered.
It was cold and icy. The roads by me were fine on my route home but apparently other places throughout the city didn't share my experience. There were several accidents reported. My own mom called me on my cell phone while I was en route home to yell at me for answering my cell phone while I was en route. (no joke)

Today the flurries are heading our way. Stay safe if need to head out there. My brother in Arizona is bragging of warm sunny days. Still... I do dream of a White Christmas.

North Lake School District is planning an anti-bullying program with 'New York Times best-seller and expert Jodee Blanco'
Gas prices are still dropping. I found $1.92 by the Waukesha Post Office yesterday.

I know most of us are better at adapting than others. Most have moved on. Gotten onto 'other' news. Truth is... I don't really want to read the papers these days. I don't want to know what is going on in the news. I don't want to hear Dave and Carol talking about world events on my morning show at WKLH. I have politics burn out.

I'm sure it's temporary and that soon I will bounce back. But for right now... I'm not going to read about the horror in the Congo, the injustices in Iraq, the pitiful state of Waukesha's not for profits. I don't want to know.

Bad mood. No, not really. But as the saying goes (with my little tweak) this girl just wants to have fun!

Can anyone relate?
Most bloggers have moved right on to the next topic. There are so many to cover. I, however, will choose the happenings downtown for my topic.
I am SO excited about this years Christmas parade. (not really sure why, maybe because I just need to get away from my politically depressed state) BUT... I really hope you are planning on attending.

I have volunteered to hand out jingle bells to the parade visitors. Don't forget to say 'hi' if you see me. Then, after jingling all the way (which is the theme for this years parade) I plan on stopping by one of The Clarke Hotel spots for a warm cup of 'Carmel Apple Cider' or Allo' Chocolate for some hot cocoa. Yummmmy!

I've heard good reports about the sushi bar. But I have to admit that I haven't visited yet. It looks as though the 3 sisters have opened at Sadie Brueners old place (i think I spelled that wrong, but I don't know HOW it was suppose to be spelled) on the 5 points. But I didn't see any 'We're Open' signs. AND the new gallery on Clinton and South is open. Nice.
I'm going to stop by the 3 sisters today and see if they offer yoga. I think it may be the answer to chilling out after this stinken election and before the Christmas shopping. (I really don't have a bad attitude)

Hope you and yours are doing well. Stay warm and don't forget to put windshield wiper fluid in your car. (nothing like not being able to see out the front window because you have a snowy, salty mess on it.) I am NOT in a bad mood!!!

Yesterday I was talking to a Waukesha resident who works with copy machines. He had been in the industry for over 20 years visiting many locations all over the city. He told me that he and his wife were really excited to see all the attention downtown Waukesha has been getting lately.

"I love coming down here for the Friday Night Live events. Now we are
looking forward to all the new business that's making its way here."

Who knew? Well, we did. Waukesha has a charming, fun downtown with something for everyone. I found out that Katydids is now open for business although I believe she has a grand re-opening scheduled. Sakura Japanese Cuisine is also open and every time I go by they are filled. The Clinton Street Gallery is open (although I haven't stopped by yet, it is on my list)

JSOnline: I still don't like the new look at JSOnline. I need too many clicks to find where I am going and the dates are not posted on the stories. Just for whatever it's worth... Money seems to be the bottom line in the following two stories regarding our children and our elderly. Hey, if we start compromising their programs to save a buck that is then spent on social services catering to the unemployed and drug addicts coming to our town from larger cities... we are a really screwed up city!

Money continues to be a consistent problem in our schools. The Waukesha School District is looking into different options to re-construct our children's educational system.
Senior citizens meal programs to be consolidated.
Chicago investors make bad on deal in Waukesha.

So as I'm reading the news today, I notice a repeating theme in some different publications. Lake County Living prints this article about food pantries. The Waukesha Freeman prints this one about donations for the Volunteer Center. So my question to you is: If donations for these services are down... let's say the food pantry for example. What will these people who use the services do as a result? Who do they serve?

Crime will inevitably go up, right? I mean I've worked in food pantries before. Yes a lot of the people are just going through a tough time and need a temporary crutch to get out. But the majority of folks were the chronic unemployed.

Okay, you've heard me rant about this before, don't bother complaining unless you are willing to become part of the solution. What's my solution??? We become a community with responsible accountability! There it's that simple. If my neighbor looses his job due to the liberal govt. extending loans to unqualified buyers because it looks good on their resumes'... and he (my neighbor) can't find anything else. I, as part of his community, would help. Send out the word at my place of employment, help him update his resume, offer to get together occasionally. Whatever! AND if they are struggling to put food on the table I would buy him some groceries. Isn't' that the golden rule???

Why have we gotten so caught up in our fence lines that we have lost community? Can't we go beyond our 'now established' comfort zone and create a new one that includes community? Listen, I don't want the govt. playing robin hood with my hard earned buck. But I do know what it's like to need a crutch. We need each other. I don't want the government to be our extended family. That's our neighbors job. It's just what I think.

Good Morning and happy Monday! I hope your weekend was fabulous.

This morning I woke up to the thermostat kicking in and the comforting sounds of warm air blowing throughout my home. Although it was too early to see the sun, I know it would have filled the room because all of the leaves on the Maple trees out back have found the compost pile. It's the one consoling thought during the cold winter months regarding the dead looking trees surrounding our home... that now we can see the sunshine through the windows.

Breakfasts, sack lunches, showers and a pot of coffee. Kisses good morning, kisses goodbye. Have a great day. Whew. It's November again. We are already thinking of roasted turkey and pumpkin pie. (at least we are at our house)

My hands have all the tell tale sign of colder weather. I'm slathering on more lotions and cuticle creams. I've used up the rest of my Good Scents 4 Her patchouli/rose lotion and need to get more. I've had to switch to my fall/winter face care system and after examining my fall and winter wardrobe over the weekend found that I desperately needed to go some shopping to update my closet. (eeks!) I even needed to update my shampoos, finding something more moisturizing. This dry, blowing air is reeking havoc. LOL!!!

Given the concerns us Wisconsinites lived through last year. Meaning SNOW and lots of it, I was relieved to see this headline: Winter likely to be more mild than last year's. This year we are going to be more prepared. I've already been shopping for shovels, salt, scrapers and am filling my trunk with my emergency kit. (this is a first for me)
Boomertown has left thousands in the bust. Baby boomers all over have been counting on Boomertown to help out financially. When I checked out their site it looked as though they were just re-doing their site. "An all-new boomertown.com is coming soon... In the last 8 years Internet technology and web communication have changed greatly. We see these changes as an opportunity to take our original format and re-shape a whole new site. Something even more dynamic. One which better embraces the concept of a boomertown!" But according to the article posted on JSOnline, the Better Business Bureau has received over 100 complaints regarding Boomertown.

It is a time to turn another corner. The elections are over and new beginnings are in store. Part of our 'next chapter' will be seen at BNN. We've finally qualified to be exposed. So, if you've found us from BNN, welcome!

Another change here is my schedule. I am working more daytime hours, which may eventually effect the times my posts get up.

Today we spent the day watching the 'Spirit Cheer' competition for Wisconsin. With 42 different school groups represented from as East as Milwaukee, North as Stevens Point, Down to (i don't remember the name of that one, but it was 3 hours south of Madison) ... well you get the idea. In between each performance I had the opportunity to chat with lots of different folks. There was a resounding conversation that was brought up. (Besides the dance teams that is) Finances!

What I heard was that although people are glad that there has been a little relief with gas prices, they are in debt and with little idea on how to get out. Companies are laying off or closing.
Several people were not sure what would take place on Monday when they went in. Will they have a job? Will the desk next to them be vacated? Will they be the ones called in for 'the talk'? These people, like many of us, are afraid of loosing what they have been working for.

am not posting this to discuss politics. I don't want to place blame or rant and rave. Bottom line, we need to work. Many are looking at 2nd and 3rd jobs. Something out of their field to offer more security. The problem is that many of us have been at our jobs for a while and are somewhat intimidated to get out there.
Very popular for job hunters these days are online job agencies. More than the 'classifieds' they show posting for employment, offer resume' help and specify your search to your preferences. Plus, you can easily apply for several jobs within an hour. Right there, on the spot.

Below are a few different local job agencies. Even if you are not worried about your position, it's not a bad idea to see what's out there.

T.G.I.F... I say sincerely. What a week!

At this point we press a head and learn from what was left behind.

I've learned to stay involved.
We plug into our communities especially the areas we are passionate about. (no passion left? that's okay too but stay involved anyway)

Are we complaining to our neighbors about city issues? Go to the city meetings.
Do we have compassion for the homeless? abused? Visit social service agencies and learn more. But be wise, balance that out with other information sources as well.
Are we seeing our schools/churches/hospitals/ etc... going in directions we love or hate? Get on the boards. Join the PTO, visit sites, volunteer.

But stay involved.

It was in my junior year D.E.C.A. class at Waukesha South when I learned this valuable lesson: Unless you are willing to become part of the solution, stop complaining about the problem. In other words either be quiet or get involved. It was a good lesson.

Exactly what Waukesha needs right now... MORE low income housing. And we are getting it. The Waukesha County Affordable Housing Task Force announced that they are going to move forward to make more affordable housing here in Waukesha. I wonder what they are going to do with the extra crime that follows? What about the drugs? Are they going to address the maintenance of these properties down the road? Because one drive downtown to any of the Pine Point apts. or most of the Berg properties will show us that what we need is NOT more low income properties, but to clean up the properties we already have. Then maybe those respectably working low income residents will feel safe enough to inhabit them.

I suppose congratulations are in order but they will not be coming from me. Not yet anyway.
There were too many a-hem moments that took place over the last few months to sell me on the idea that you, Barack Hussein Obama are, indeed the best person for the job.

You have, however, shown us your character.
I have seen you as a someone who surrounds himself with hate groups. Hating Jews, Hating America. Militant groups and terrorists. That is too much hate for me.

And I hate to say it... but this election was not won fair and square.

So BHO you have a lot of work to do, but I will be keeping my eye on the job market (especially the coal industry), the terrorist country alert (ask your v.p.), protecting my church, my kids, my back.
I hope we will be able to sleep at night but I doubt we will really feel safe.

A Black Panther presence

Voters are being intimidated by the Black Panthers whom are blocking the entrances to voting locations AND holding weapons. In spite of their very presence they are denying any illegalities. In fact, they are able to stand around. (isn't there a no loitering policy??)

But are actually holding, with clear presence, sticks or batons.

'The Panthers practiced militant self-defense of minority communities against the U.S. government, and fought to establish revolutionary socialism through mass organizing and community based programs.'

The Black Panthers group was founded in 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale.

In the continued struggle for civil rights The Black Panthers marched, always armed to be heard and respected.

For many, the group has gone too far. Many have considered their actions and beliefs over the top and unnecessary. In fact in their fight for civil equality they have demonstrated sever racial hatred as well as the inability to unite. Today, 42 years after the groups founding, the rules of membership remain the same, as well does the mission and devices of communication.

Soon after the first video was shot, the news arrived and this is what they saw.

He denies knowing anything about his pal who was taken into police custody earlier. We later found out the the panther speaking in this video actually does live in this building and was working at the poll grounds at the time. He is able to be there, wearing whatever he chooses.
He is not, however allowed to carry weapons of intimidation.

The man who did call the police did say that he was told by the panther to stay inside and that a black man is going to be elected tonight.

The Black Panthers foundation lies in the vision to served the oppressed 'black' people in their communities as well as raising awareness to their issues. The issues are outlined in the 10 Point Plan. This plan is to be known by all members of the party as it expresses the expectations that they are working towards.

The Ten Point Plan

WE WANT FREEDOM. WE WANT POWER TO DETERMINE THE DESTINY OF OUR BLACK AND OPPRESSED COMMUNITIES. We believe that Black and oppressed people will not be free until we are able to determine our destinies in our own communities ourselves, by fully controlling all the institutions which exist in our communities.

WE WANT FULL EMPLOYMENT FOR OUR PEOPLE. We believe that the federal government is responsible and obligated to give every person employment or a guaranteed income. We believe that if the American businessmen will not give full employment, then the technology and means of production should be taken from the businessmen and placed in the community so that the people of the community can organize and employ all of its people and give a high standard of living.

WE WANT AN END TO THE ROBBERY BY THE CAPITALISTS OF OUR BLACK AND OPPRESSED COMMUNITIES. We believe that this racist government has robbed us and now we are demanding the overdue debt of forty acres and two mules. Forty acres and two mules were promised 100 years ago as restitution for slave labor and mass murder of Black people. We will accept the payment in currency which will be distributed to our many communities. The American racist has taken part in the slaughter of our fifty million Black people. Therefore, we feel this is a modest demand that we make.

WE WANT DECENT HOUSING, FIT FOR THE SHELTER OF HUMAN BEINGS. We believe that if the landlords will not give decent housing to our Black and oppressed communities, then housing and the land should be made into cooperatives so that the people in our communities, with government aid, can build and make decent housing for the people.

WE WANT DECENT EDUCATION FOR OUR PEOPLE THAT EXPOSES THE TRUE NATURE OF THIS DECADENT AMERICAN SOCIETY. WE WANT EDUCATION THAT TEACHES US OUR TRUE HISTORY AND OUR ROLE IN THE PRESENT-DAY SOCIETY. We believe in an educational system that will give to our people a knowledge of the self. If you do not have knowledge of yourself and your position in the society and in the world, then you will have little chance to know anything else.

WE WANT COMPLETELY FREE HEALTH CARE FOR All BLACK AND OPPRESSED PEOPLE. We believe that the government must provide, free of charge, for the people, health facilities which will not only treat our illnesses, most of which have come about as a result of our oppression, but which will also develop preventive medical programs to guarantee our future survival. We believe that mass health education and research programs must be developed to give all Black and oppressed people access to advanced scientific and medical information, so we may provide our selves with proper medical attention and care.

WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE END TO POLICE BRUTALITY AND MURDER OF BLACK PEOPLE, OTHER PEOPLE OF COLOR, All OPPRESSED PEOPLE INSIDE THE UNITED STATES. We believe that the racist and fascist government of the United States uses its domestic enforcement agencies to carry out its program of oppression against black people, other people of color and poor people inside the united States. We believe it is our right, therefore, to defend ourselves against such armed forces and that all Black and oppressed people should be armed for self defense of our homes and communities against these fascist police forces.

WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE END TO ALL WARS OF AGGRESSION. We believe that the various conflicts which exist around the world stem directly from the aggressive desire of the United States ruling circle and government to force its domination upon the oppressed people of the world. We believe that if the United States government or its lackeys do not cease these aggressive wars it is the right of the people to defend themselves by any means necessary against their aggressors.

Why is it a double shot of espresso in my latte' this morning? I voted. We've been talking about these candidates for months. We've analyzed their moves, their policies, their beliefs, pasts, finances, families, moralities, health, thoughts, dreams.... and what do we know? Only one thing for sure. Today is the day.

We slip in our ballot and all we have left to do is put on our 'I Voted' sticker, politely say thanks and walk away... with anticipation.
Some anxiety.
Not wondering if we choose the correct candidate, but whether or not the person in line before and after me did.

So, I brewed some extra strong coffee this morning, toasted my english muffin and ... wait.

But I do wonder or at least I questioned. Although I got in line at 6:50 a.m. and was back out in my car by 8 a.m. it took less than a minute to actually cast my ballot. And that was with the assistance of my 7th grader. (I wanted her to experience the 'I voted' responsibility that Americans have) I explained pre-registration, the confirmation of identity, then we looked over the ballot cards. We discussed straight parties and write-ins. All that, plus the machine, the sticker, the cordial 'thanks' and we were still out in minutes. So what in God's good earth did Obama need to do inside that booth for 15 min.? I can't even imagine what it's like on the south side of Chicago this morning. I do know that I would be looking over my shoulder.

Jake Tapper reports that Shoesmith Elementary school, the place that Obama went to vote this morning is also the same place that Ayers and Farrakhan also went to cast ballots.

More children are left under the Safe Haven law in Nebraska. These are 16 year old children.

Waukesha County has a history of large voter turnout. In the last election 96% of our residents showed up at the polls. Poll workers are expecting even larger numbers today. The results, however, will not be tallied until after polls close and counting will begin after 8 p.m.

I know this sounds 'anti-community' but I don't believe more money is the answer to solve the problems that are addressed by our Waukesha social service agencies. Yes we need a strong financial base to help these agencies succeed. The real problems tend to stem from poor 'corporate' organization. One of our major social agencies located here in Waukesha is inviting Milwaukee's problems into our small downtown Waukesha... and asking us to give more money to fund it. No more! I'm tiered of big city gangs, drugs, prostitution and lack of accountability in our community. I'm more than willing to support, both financially and otherwise, programs that are addressed to Waukesha. Stop asking for my finances and glorifying verbiage to manipulate your programming towards Milwaukee servicing and telling me it is for Waukesha. In the mean time Waukesha is suffering and people needing those services here are going without.

So many polls, so little time. Yesterday one of my Republican friends told me that it was over. The race is over and Obama won. I was truly taken back by the comments that had generated within their discussion circle. Ladies and gentlemen, this is not over! Please keep in mind that the majority of our media is biased-LIBERAL!!!

There are a lot of pollsters out there sending numbers to encourage/discourage according to their agenda. To some it looks like the election is, in fact, over. IT'S NOT!

ZOGBY SHOCKER: McCain 48, Obama 47 Be encouraged Republicans. Our nation is clearly split. This is still anyones race.

Don't you remember? 4 years ago we had the same style of media induced defeat-us messages sent our way. 8 years ago... same story.

So don't quit yet. The story is still being written.

Our nation is split down the middle right now. I will let the Democrats rest in their temporary state of victory. Call me an optimist, maybe a little too faithful that morality will win, but I see this as far from over.

About a week ago I finished Helen Fielding's Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination. I was somewhat disappointed with this read. For the length of the book there was too much content. Fielding easily could have expanded any number of the ideas, which she introduced.

Political Cover ups
Al-Qaeda
Takfiri

Or even expanded the relationships that were introduced. Instead, although somewhat amusing, it touched slightly on all of the topics without resolve.

This book would be appropriate for the person who wants a 306 pg. quick read without much substance. For a vacation, perhaps. The author, a journalist and novelist, lives in London and that is apparent in her verbiage. On occasion the word choices tripped me up until I resolved them to an English slang.

Next read: William Paul Youngs The Shack. Why?? Last week I heard this book discussed in 3 different circles with comments like:

"It is sweeping the Nation"
"You mean you haven't heard of it?"
and... "Hey what did you think of ..."

I love book discussions so I thought I'd pick it up. On the cover it is exclaimed to be the '#1 New York Times Bestseller' with over 2 million copies in print. I don't really care about all that. Countless times I've found that I tend to like the movies that got 2 thumbs down or books that don't always make, well... anyone's list. So, I'll begin this with just a little more anticipation than some good conversation.

It is not a secrete that we are a family of animal lovers. Even when we lived in Russia, in our small apartment on the 21st floor we had a German Shepherd. Believe me when I say it's no picnic caring for an animal in a city where you can't find dog food, but we adapted.

Upon our return we went through our fair share of cute little kitties, clumsy adorable puppies, countless tanks with fish, lizards, hermit crabs (that was short lived), frogs, snakes... yes snakes (but for that one we needed a strict agreement... in writing!), hamsters and turtles. I may have forgotten someone in there but you get the jest of it.

We've adopted most of our pets as 'our family'. (there are clear exceptions and all within reason, of coarse) But when we moved to the house we currently live in 5 years ago, I made a new rule that the cats were not allowed in the house. (dang if I know how to get that smell out) I am super sensitive to scents and certainly did not want to deal with that smell any longer.

There is a problem, however, with having the cats out and not in. We are country folk. That means we get the benefits of country life. Including all the rodents that make their way into our home. We've gotten snakes, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, birds, bats... you get the pict.

Oh they are very happy here, don't get me wrong. It's warm and certainly an abundance of food and water compliments of our children, is found in the most unlikely places. But my husband and I, once again, put our foot (the two have become one in this situation) down and say ENOUGH! No more uninvited rodents in the house!

We put out poison. They ate it. They died... somewhere. Oh yeah, did I say 'they'?

Yes there appears to be countless dead rodents stinking up my basement, attic, inner walls in their last efforts to say 'ha, ha, ha. I'm not going with out leaving a calling card'. Can you say GROSS!

So, I know I need to go downstairs and climb on the treadmill or stationary bike to work out but there is absolutely no possible way to get my hesitating toosh motivated to go down there and get cardio. And that is my excuse.

At least I didn't say the dog ate my homework.

Today began with a last minute decision to attend the meeting at city hall regarding plans for rental and owner occupied housing. After that I became disheartened with downtown politics. Tonight I'm just frustrated with all politics. I'm feeling somewhat deflated and so my post today is also touched with the flavor of a defeatist attitude.

I am about to turn it all off and watch Dancing with the Stars while I tune out the political commercials.

Yesterday we played a little afternoon hooky. We wanted to visit the Milwaukee Public Museum and experience the Titanic Exhibit. I was really interested in the artifacts that were recovered. It was fascinating to not only see the artifacts themselves but also the footage and photos of how it was recovered. I tend to get involved with individual stories of the passengers, which made the experience a little emotional for me. I would recommend this trip but plan to spend some time there and bring your reading glasses.

We also stopped by Carrabba's Italian Grill. It's the second time we ate there. It was FABULOUS! Loved the food. Although our waitress wore too much perfume, which in turn made my drink taste like her perfume. By the time my dinner arrived I had forgotten all about it.

After a little carting around of the kids (whom did not join us for our 'hooky afternoon') we did some shopping and came home to watch a movie. I'm not a huge fan of 'scary' movies. Mostly because I can't stand suspense. I am that horrible person that sits in the middle of the theater and talks to the movie. I scream too loudly and grab whomever is closest to protect me from the crazy demon on screen. Since I am running out of victims to join me, I just don't go much anymore. But I remember, a million years ago, when the Jason and Freddie movies first came out. I remember, as a teenager, watching the terrifying scenes of hopeless murder and almost escapes. They freaked me out!

Last night Halloween was on t.v. We watched with our kids and to my surprise, it was stupid! Not only was it stupid but it wasn't even scary. My question then raises. Was it not scary to us, to me because we have been so desensitized by all the violence surrounding us? I mean I remember being freaked out just by the music. Geez! I didn't even need a cartoon to help me sleep. (tee hee hee)

My Super Sweet 16. I can't even imagine what it would be like to splurge like that.

I'm seeing red flags all over the place. They are surrounding the Obama/Biden platform. The crazy thing about them is that they are being planted by Joe Biden himself! Okay Joe, I have considered myself warned.

What I want to know, what lots of us want to know, including Obama is 'What do mean by that Joe?'
One thing we do know about Biden is that he doesn't put his money where is mouth is. Biden may be supporting a campaign which tends to market a lot of politics towards 'helping spread the wealth around'. But this is a man who has given a mere smidgen of his wealth out of the goodness of his heart, of coarse. As seen in Biden's tax returns. In 1999 he only gave less than 1/16th of 1% of his income. Even on a campaign year he gave only slightly over 1/4th of 1%. Looking at the 10 years of tax reported giving, Biden has only given around 1/8th of 1% of his income. He doesn't mind bragging about his upper crust.

It's not just about money. Although I am a true believer of walking the talk. Maybe he is trying to redeem himself with a few edits. There is no secrete that Biden did not find Obama qualified to be our American president in this election.

What about race? He doesn't seem to mind voicing his thoughts as seen here: But that wasn't the first time he has offered off collar racial comments. (just an fyi, if any other white man had said these things in the McCain camp he would be absolutely slammed!)

One of the more recent comments has Americans wondering..??.. what does this guy, this insider who knows all the world leaders by first name know that he is NOT telling? What "major international challenge" are we going to be tested on? We want answers Biden.

It was Biden who said that he "..would be honored to run with or against John McCain, because I think the country would be better off,..." We know, Joe. We know. And we thank-you for the warnings, the red flags and the revealing of character through your deeds and words.

Listen, politicians play a lot on words. A lot of Americans get that. But many, especially the 'undecided' are convinced to cast their vote based on the best marketing strategy in the final weeks of campaigning. I did not make this stuff up. Biden himself can take credit for inserting his foot too many times.

I urge you to look beyond the marketing calls, mail, ads etc... and choose the candidate whom you can trust to grow our economy, lead our troops, protect our freedoms, encourage respectable morality. This is a very important election and your vote counts!

Finally! Waukesha County wants to cite welfare, housing cheats I think this is long overdue as I've heard the 'i don't care, society owes me' words and attitudes come from downtown Waukesha residents using state and federal benefits for housing.
Another lovely incident here in Waukesha by a former Milwaukee resident. Parents charged in disruption. Give me a break. Cussing and batting their arms around in the school, in front of classrooms filled with kids. Are we waking up to the possibility that Waukesha is just not big enough for both Waukesha and Milwaukee?
This democratic family gets creative to detour vandals. Instead... Vandals leave a calling card. I think this lesson was learned. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. each others property, boys.

I spent an exciting afternoon yesterday downtown Waukesha. One of my stops was touring The Clarke Hotel and The Black Trumpet restaurant... and I have to say, wow!
We have all been anticipating what it will be. Will it work, won't it? How will it help business? Who is going to stay there? Why Waukesha? Again I say, wow.
Let me begin with the kind of thing most gals notice right away, the color scheme, the decor, the atmosphere. It was comfortably modern. Inviting and warm colors. State of the art appliances and fixtures. Gorgeous. The problem... now I really want to redue my obviously out of date and under decorated home. Dang it!

Also around the city yesterday was a notice that Katydids is soon to be ready at its new location at 401 W. Main Street. (across from Ottos) Check out her link at: http://www.katydidshomedecor.com/ for updated photos and fall shopping. Right away the high celiengs, arched entry, and added kitchen space captures attention. I am looking forward to the opening.

Only 2 weekends left for the Waukesha Farmer's Market. I'm not sure what the weather is suppose to be like this weekend, but with only a few weeks before trick-or-treat, it's a good time to stop by and look for pumpkins and fall decorations.

I heard that our sushi bar will be most likely be open next week or the week after. I need to add that I'm not a huge fan of raw fish, but willing to try it out anyway. Lot's of good reviews so maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

The mystery has been solved. The three sisters moving in at the 5 points, or is it 4 sisters?? heck I also heard there were 5 of them, anyway, the sisters moving in the 2 vacant spots by Dave's restaurant are not REALLY sisters. Like... omg, there was no resemblance anyway! They are proclaimed 'spiritual sisters' and will be doing rake, yoga, massages, etc... It looks as though they are building a studio in the larger space and going to be selling retail products in the smaller one. They will try to open in December (i think).

Help is needed

Have you ever needed a little help? For most of us it is embarrassing, humiliating, humbling to NEED help. It forces most to do things that they wouldn't normally do under normal circumstances. Unfortunately we are hosting, in our community, a large number of folks who NEED help. They can't afford groceries, toiletries, diapers. Without places like the Food Pantry of Waukesha County, what would they do? What would YOU do? Resources low, kids hungry, credit exhausted?
Well... I am a true believer in what goes around, comes around. You reap what you sow. Are we investing in our communities or contributing to the despair of others?
Now in case you are wondering, and for those of you who know me well, I'm not a believer in enabling unhealthy lifestyles. I.e.: give a drunk cash for his/her next bottle. Instead, I truly subscribe to healthy accountability. Sometimes, however, our very basic needs need to be met before ANY help can be received. Not a single one of us is beyond hard times, especially in today's economy. Besides, it's easy to help. Really.

I am asking if you would you consider hosting a food/diaper drive in your neighborhood or place of employment? I've done this and it's really a no sweat way to help out others. The Food Pantry of Waukesha County makes it even easier by offering free downloads and assistance to help get you started.

I am ashamed to say that not until recently, like the past 6 or 7 years, have I been aware of some of our communities services. Yeah we already know, by default, about our schools, churches, hospitals... yaada, yaada... But not necessarily other stuff.

I have been involved in social services, on several levels, for the past few years. Those experiences has forced me to learn about our Waukesha resources. While at the last Art Crawl downtown on Oct. 3rd. I asked a few people if they knew about any of them. Shelters? Clothing? Food? Most people were oblivious to our resources, just as I had been. Enjoy it while it lasts

There never seems to be a lull in activity at our house. Today, after getting off the phone with the school nurse, my son's not feeling well, I got in my car to go check it out myself. I was stopped on the side of the road by some prehistoric size bug, which conveniently landed in my lap. Ewwww! (this is why I have to make sure my windows are closed at night... all the creepy bugs get into my car) Once composed I continued on my journey to the school.

Boy, it seems bright today. Way brighter than yesterday and the sun isn't even shining. Now where did I put my glasses? Pulling to the side of the road for the second time it hit me. How beautiful is this? Every other tree was magically pained over night. Scarlet reds, jolting yellows, bright greens, rich burgundy's. Oh my.

The weather forecast did say that today would be one of the last of the warm ones. I'm not taking that for granted. Once I got home, took care of my son, I got out my camera to snap a few photos for you to enjoy also.

This post is for all you home bounders or those of you stuck inside four walls not able to enjoy this last day of gorgeousness.

Homecoming

Ahhh... homecoming week. I remember the class color wars, senior stunt day, pep rally, working on the float, a week of organized chaos leading up to the well cheered game and finally the dance.

Now that my kids are in high school I get to re-live it all through their eyes. We have had the closets emptied looking for outfits for 50's day, pajama day, crazy hair day and color wars day. One of my sons was in the pie-eating contest earlier this week (who's bright idea was that? What a mess and in the middle of the school day. He smelled like day old bakery for 2 days) and the following day the class tug-of-war.

Carroll University http://www.cc.edu/ is also celebrating Homecoming this week. Expect a fun crowd to be lining the streets. Carroll has around 3000 students that will be out and about the celebration. The parade begins at 10 am tomorrow. The route will head west down Main st. Here are the streets on the route:

Main-Clinton, to Wisconsin, to East, to College, to Barstow, to Cook.

Barstow will be closed from 9am-5pm.

V.P. Debate

Today I have spent my morning working and peeking through the news from the waiting room at the hospital... again. This time it's not a motorcycle accident but one of the surgeries, which needed to follow-up from the accident two weeks ago. The good news, it's only a day surgery and I will be home with my recovering spouse this evening. Just in time for the V.P. Debate.

I hope you are planning on watching. What to expect? Well, Gwen Ifill will be the moderator for the debate. Gwen is a strong advocate for the Obama camp. An author of her new book, to be released in January called "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama". The book itself has not been released for view but according to its publisher Doubleday:

Ifill has been accused of media bias in the past. Most recently after Sarah Palin's speech to the GOP.
This is why I get so sick of politics... it's a love/hate relationship really. I am all in favor of a good honest political debate. But I know that is, without doubt, an oxymoron.

The Scarecrow worked. Well sort of. The truth is it scared the ba gee bees out of me this morning. I thought this would entertain you.

I woke up at 5:30 to get breakfast made and lunches ready for all...not to mention getting the java going. Still dark outside and me being half awake I thought I saw something outside when I walked past the window. Just my imagination... too dark to see anything.

Considering the day ahead, a doctor apt. that needs to be made, appointments that need to be kept, bills to be paid... yaada, yaada, yaada phone calls, letters, e-mails... I'm in my own little world putting mayo on the turkey sandwiches and carefully splitting apart the 'fork split' english muffins for the egg sandwiches my oldest would certainly want for breakfast. (what does 'fork split mean anyway??? I ALWAYS need to cut the thing open)

Then I saw it again. Something.

I need to let the dogs out. We don't want a mess on the floor. I send them out the other door. Not the one that might be by something. I don't think I want to know.

Back to my morning coffee pot and deli meat... the 'something' outside was forgotten about. Children are up now, I hear them. Radios on, shower's going, toilets flushing. I hear the dogs bark. Great. Let's wake up the neighbors too.

I rush to THAT door, forgetting that something is out there. AND EEEKKKSSS!!!! It's still there, but now it's light enough to see the shadows of movement. EEEKKKSSS again!!!! The dogs are barking at it too. It IS something. I flip on the light. Its the stinkn' scarecrow that I got at Retzners two weekends ago by some mom & pop crafter. (I don't usually get into crafts but this guy was cute in the full sun on the Sat. afternoon I bought him)

Big breath. I walk outside, pick him up, and move him away from the window. I changed his shirt to a green packer sweatshirt that has become too beat up. Certainly the green will be a bit less shocking for the next victim.

We don't have a crow problem anyway. That thing is a Scarepeople, not a Scarecrow.

One of my family's favorite Autumn desserts is my homemade French Apple Pie. Last weekend we went to Retzner's Apple Festival and did our traditional stocking up of various apples, which are not available at the supermarket.
Saturday evening... yummy! French Apple Pie, hot out of the oven served with frozen vanilla custard. mmmm m. So good, in fact, I though I should be a good neighbor and share the recipe with you.

French Apple Pie

6 C. apple (peeled, pared, sliced) I like to use at least 2 different types of apples
1/2 to 2/3 C. Sugar
2 t. cinnamon
2 T. flour

Mix the above together in a large bowl and place in your pastry lined pie pan.top with the following in the form of crumbs:

1/2 C. butter
1/2 C. brown sugar
1 C. flour
1 or 2 t. cinnamon

Bake 15 min. in a 450 degree oven. Drop temp to 350 and bake 20-30 min. longer. If top or crust browns too quickly, cover with foil. Serve warm with frozen vanilla custard for most favorable results. Enjoy!

As much as the downtowners have been buzzing with conversation about the new The Clarke Hotel I am always surprised when I find a Waukesha resident who responds blankly...
'the what?', 'a new hotel?', 'Where?'

So now that the hotel's website has been up, I am more than thrilled to forward the information on: www.theclarkehotelwi.com I did a check on my links, to the right of the blog, but for whatever reason the link didn't work... my lack of computer skills I'm sure, but the site itself is functioning well.

With all of our household excitement I hadn't had a chance to get downtown and snap the photos I wanted to include, but the week prior it was really fun to note all the progress.

On the five points (basically the corner of Broadway and Main) will house the floating bar. The tables will be situated to maximize the best views. The restaurant will be on the first floor.

The lower level will host the conference rooms, holding up to 150 people.

The second and third floors will be the actual hotel front desk as well as the the rooms. Each room uniquely designed with upscale linens and amenities. There is also a fabulous suit with a library, two bedrooms and two full baths. (seriously, I could live there comfortably)

I believe that this hotel could really help put our city on the map. We already have some wonderful businesses established down their. I love supporting our small businesses!!! Rumor is... there are quite a few new ones in the works. And who doesn't love the riverwalk?

Nobody really knows the impact this will make, but with the addition of the hotel, less vacancy signs in the windows and the sheer size of the new stadium coming into Frame Park, I certainly hope I don't hear 'the what?' comments anymore.

My morning latte this week was spent at the emergency room. My husband was in a motorcycle accident with a deer. We were very lucky the damage wasn't worse than it was as everything is 'fixable'. He is needing oral and orthopedic surgery but HE IS ALIVE with no internal damage.
Thank God!

Cleaning up the streets

This past Thursday the BID (Business Improvement District) held it's monthly board of directors meeting. It was clear that downtown Waukesha does not want it's trash to be polluting the streets (and sidewalks, and yards, and allies) any longer.

A new committee was formed to clean it up. There was little hesitation from the BID board as well as business owners to work together on this problem which has gotten out of control.
This is a community issue that requires all of our efforts. Vickie Hekkers, the BID board President comments on the issue:

"Commerical property owners should have facilities for their tenants," Hekkers
said. "It becomes a problem when they don’t." Waukesha BID creates trash task force

The new committee will work on making sure that the facilities are in place, bins, receptacles, etc.. and that the trash is placed out on the day of the pickup.

Another part of the problem is that some residents are placing their trash out days ahead of pickup. Not only is this unsightly but the trash gets blown all over the city. It's an ugly mess. People need to be responsible with their trash.

The Waukesha BID and several business owners are serious about making sure that our downtown is clean. I admire and am encouraged with the 'take action' attitude that came out of the birth of this new committee. Willing to put their work gloves on to make my trip to downtown more pleasant.

Now if you were one of the thousands downtown for Weekend in Waukesha, you may have seen Alderman Radish down there sweeping up some of the excess trash from the overflowing bins. Hats off to you for this effort!

I have a gripe!

As I was reading through the papers today I came upon two articles which really made me concerned regarding the maturity levels of some reporters. I was interested in the content of the stories. Both were under the 'Waukesha' headlines and both concerned families.

One was about a new organization, which helps new marriages learn to communicate. The final comment of the reporter

"After all, how’s your husband going to know to put away his socks if all he hears is the voice of what he perceives to be a controlling wife?" Seriously???

I would like to presume that husbands are a little bit more mature and dare I say intelligent than that. Is this reporter implying that if one spouse perceives their partner poorly they are too stupid to know what to do with their socks????Life after the wedding ... what to do next? One local organization helps marriages thrive

The Other is the one that really got my blood boiling. As I was going through the Things you need to know Today, in the Freeman the final story regarding a woman not protecting her child caught my attention. The bottom line is that a mother didn't stop her boyfriend from molesting her child. The little girl was only 14 when the boyfriend, 30 yrs. old, began to molest the child. the idiot reporter made some idiot comment that implies that the child seduces the molester.

I am stunned that the reporter of this story would phrase the abuse this way. She was a child! He was an adult, more than twice her age and should have known better. Where is the mention of his part in this? Grrrr

An Article just out from the Wisconsin Law Journal says that: persons in Wisconsin convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence (d.v.) will be banned from owning a firearm.

One might argue that it is a constitutional right to own a gun. but "Judge Crabb reasoned, “These persons have shown that it is
they and not any outside intruders that pose the greater danger to their families.”"

We are pet people. I always grew up with either dogs or cats. (the staple family pets) My exception, as a kid, was when my little brother got a Guinea pig. Geeez I hated that thing. SQUEAK, SQUEAK, SQUEAK... all night long.

He loved it, which gave me ammo as a kid. 'don't tell mom or I'll hold your pig upside down' (the thought was that that would make the eyes pop out, I never bothered to check the facts about it) The threat worked. But that never changed the fact that my love for pets stops at rodents.
So, when my daughter spent the last year asking, pleading and eventually begging for a Hamster, it was obvious that would not be happening.

I broke.

She did so well in school last year and had been so helpful around the house. I wanted to reward her with, well let's say... a pair of earrings or a special lunch date. OH NOOOO she wanted that hamster. She promised that I would never need to see it. She would feed it, clean the cage, do all of it. FINE!

We went to Petco in Delafield and were introduced to a tan, baby, male hamster. I have to admit, the thing is kind of cute, from a distance.

Two weeks after I bought the young, male hamster... IT BEGAN GIVING BIRTH! Apparently the manager of the place, who was the one who sold us the thing in the first place, didn't lift up her little hamster skirt. Now we have 10 of them.

And the advice Petco gave us, make sure you separate the mom from the babies when she begins to EAT them! OMG!!!

I have to say that initially I was really not thrilled with the '08 elections. Honestly the thought of Obama sitting at the head of the American government scared(scares) the ba-gee-bees(my official technical term) out of me, and I didn't see how the McCain party would be able to up the ante' (so to speak) like they have with the introduction of Palin, and what an intro. speech it was!

Seriously, I couldn't (and still can't) calm myself when I think about the security of our country, of everything we have gone though as a nation, as neighbors, since the shock and the horror of 9/11 and how a man like Obama thinks he could make it all better.

After looking carefully over where Obama stands on national security and where McCain stands on it I am blown away. Obama's language is as weak as his plan. Senator Obama, I want to know how you plan on protecting my family and myself? Because all I see is weakness.

Okay, I don't want war any more than the next guy. I hate it. But I fear that with a man like Obama in our American presidency we will turn into a nation of yellow jello eating ... (well you get where I'm going with this) It scares me!

This is a tough world. I'm not sure how to tell you this Obama, but there are bad guys out there who are really excited about your phased withdrawal. There are bad guys with real guns and stuff... but we won't be able to protect ourselves under your plan and I don't see how you will be able to either.

So, I've changed my mind. I am really excited about the '08 elections. I believe this is the most important election of our lifetime. I'm excited because we have a strong leadership in McCain and a new, fresh voice in Palin.

It's the "F" word that I don't pull out for the faint hearted. But it is time. The word is out.

FEMINISM.

Why have we gotten so timid of that word? I have my 'femi-nazi' sisters to blame for this. The far lefters who have gotten so hell bent on extremes that the rest of us who believe in the core of the word (that women and men should have equal opportunity) embarrassed to use it.

I would like to submit that women AND MEN (a hemmm) feminists are ALLOWED to believe in Pro-life without compromising equality within the sexes.

Pro-Life. To me this is an issue of morality, not equality. Life and death. Who, besides God, has the right to determine whether an unborn child gets to live or not?

You ultra bra-burning feminists are so over the top that you are actually hurting the definition within the actual fight for equality! Women and men are afraid of the stinking word because of your representation of it. I urge you to seriously think about this.

I don't know too many men or women who don't believe in the core... equality. I also do not know many who would openly use the 'f' word in public. I have actually been urged, within a women's organization against domestic violence, to NOT use the word for fear of what the listeners would interpret. (this is true!)

Well Sarah Palin, you have my vote. Not because you are a woman. But because my vote is for morality... for life.

Sarah & Todd's 17 year old daughter Bristol Palin is 5 months pregnant. The announcement was made today in an effort to ward off the rumor mill.

Bristol is planning on having this child, (thank God!) and is planning on getting married to the father of the child, Levi.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates,"

This was not a surprise to the McCain campaign officials. They decided to announce the pregnancy right away due to many of the liberal blogs having a field day. Their stories have been an attempt to destroy the McCain/Palin campaign in typical dirty politics.

Palin has given the republican party a fresh breath of hope. According to Gallup Daily, Obama's lead over McCain has slightly narrowed from 8% to 6%. The latest Gallup poll, out today shows the 48% to 42% picks.
She sure is given them something to talk about.

What a day

I returned to Harley Fest again yesterday. We couldn't get over what fantastic weather we had. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. Did you get a chance to walk the streets and peek at some of those bikes? Now I'm not a biker, but WOW. There were some awesome bikes.

The Guess Who was fantastic! They came out for an encore which had the crowd roaring. No fancy lights, gimmicks, fireworks, costumes, just great music on a great afternoon.

From where I sit, the event went off really well. Great job to those involved.

It was awesome seeing so many locals enjoying the festivities with our guests, downtown yesterday. I was able to meet bikers from all over Wisconsin, across America, and overseas. New Zealand, Hong Kong, Germany, and Beloit... ya gotta love America.

Today even more is to be expected. If you haven't been yet, don't miss today.

In the headlines today:

Two Milwaukee women were arrested in Waukesha on Tuesday for 'working as escorts without a permit'. Let that be a lesson to all you Milwaukee prostitutes. Get your stink'n papers in order before you decide to sell your bodies, minds, and souls to us Waukeshaians. Don't you know we check for that stuff??? By the way, that brings the number of these arrests to 19 since MARCH!!!
Kudos to the Waukesha county Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Unit. They won the 'Investigation of the Year award by a state drug officers association'. Great job cleaning up our streets. By the way, the major arrests were made as a result from a 'tip'. Let's keep our eyes open Waukesha. This isn't the military... We ask, we tell!

Should parents be leery of the new Kettle Moraine High School schedule?
After all, it does sound as though the school board has spent considerable time planning to "innovate, and improve education." It's called: “Learning Without Boundaries.”

What has some parents concerned is the random feeling schedule. (Yes, I know most kids have no problem adjusting to craziness. However, what about those common children who are already struggling to make assignments, get to class on time, etc???)
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday offer 51 minute classes with 30 minute lunch and 5 minute passing. Tuesday, however, offers 41 minute classes, 25 minute lunches and 5 minute passing.

The result is an early release on Tuesdays. (That's the other thing most parents are concerned with.)

The school board says that this schedule will enable teacher an opportunity to work together-improving their teaching. Students will have the option to stay later and work with other students or use the library. (I fear that only a select few will use that opportunity, the same few who would normally use it and the ones who have the invitation to leave, will.)

I guess time will tell. The school board says this will help consistency, but I'm having a hard time believing that. I have been wrong before. Hope I am this time too.

Well, as if the festivities already planned for the Harley Davidson's Ride to 105 Weekend in Waukesha, weren't enough, the BID announced that there's more!

This Saturday only, the Waukesha Farmer's Market will be located on the North Side of the Fox River. Right next to RiverPark Community Church (a fabulous non-denominational Christian community church) at 210 Bank Street.

Let me encourage you to join me down there. I've never been disappointed by the selection of vendors we have here. We always end up leaving happy with a great selection of veggies, cheeses, bakery, and samplings from some of the local downtown businesses. But THIS Saturday, Aug. 30 (where DID the month go???) we have another guest...

Radio Disney will be at the market from 10-11 am hosting “Quest for the Cup” The kids who show up will have the opportunity to get involved with some really fun activities. It sounds like a good time for the whole family.

We sometimes forget that it wasn't that long ago in which we were found not worthy to vote, work or become educated. It was acceptable for husbands to discipline their wives for whatever they found worthy of discipline.

Ovens are preheating all over downtown Waukesha today in preparation for our guests to start rolling and rumbling through town. I just hope nobody is baking a souffle! (It will, no doubt, fall.)

From the large banners being hung across the streets, to the very cute cuddly sign hanging in Cuddles, and newer chrome plated merchandise on display, to the Cutler park theater prep., there is no doubt that we are expecting company.

I'm anticipating the loud arrival to be greeted hospitably. With our warm Waukesha arms wide open as we happily endure the elevated volume, displaced scenery, lingering smells of beer, and anticipated bins (hopefully not streets) filled with an abundance of trash. And for what?
Well, my dear friends, we are glad you are coming, but please don't forget your wallets.

With the emptier look of vacated storefronts and the large, highly anticipated hotel construction project, wouldn't it be grand for this week to boost our downtown economy? After all, why not? We have a beautiful downtown. Really beautiful. With some really great shops, cafes, restaurants, and services.

I say 'get out your money belts' to all you merchants. May our guests enjoy your hospitality and may our community be there to help out as well. I know I will!

Gotta love nature

So I'm in this season of reading.

I love relaxing on the deck with a good book. Maybe it's due to the fabulous summer weather. Especially when the ideal day, without the horrid humidity (which seems to worsen every year of my life) or the typical Wisconsin blizzard (which we are currently out of season for) presents itself.

It never seems to fail, however, that relaxing is a non-entity in our home. I'm easily distracted with kids, animals, the media, phone, etc... and nature?

Yep nature. No, I'm not usually squeamish with insects. (Just 2 weeks ago I mustered up the herculean strength it took to pull out the deer tick, of which was imbedded into my hip with NO permission what so ever! (the nerve))

But as I was finishing up my latest read: The Girl with No Shadow, by JoAnne Harris, I felt as though I was being watched. Not normally paranoid, I decided to ignore the obvious company.
Soon, however, I found the occupant. He was large and very animated. A new neighbor who had decided to perch him/herself onto my shoulder. Needless to say my book needed to wait so I could take the shot of his/her new home.

Needless to say,
I did a little housekeeping before I continued.

This after he prolongs the announcement of his VP pick today. It's said that the announcement could come at any time.

It reminds me of waiting for the delivery of an unfit mother's child. Will it be a girl? Will it be a boy? Do they actually want this baby? Will the baby be accepted by the rest of the family? Who will the baby take after?

Yeah, yeah, yeah... lot's of speculations. But I found it somewhat funny is how plans on sharing the good news.

With parents giving up on their kids (see yesterday's post It's 11pm. Do you know where your mom is? ) now one of Waukesha's pillars of success for our youth giving up his legal rights.

Haven't we heard? .. don't we subscribe? .. IT TAKES A (yes, I would have said village, but I hate overusing someone else's quote) You get the point.

Michael Haas... what were you thinking? The result of being lead around by the contents of your Levis will really hurt our kids.

What does this mean for Enlight? And will this experience enlight(en) our community to step up our efforts a notch or will we sit back with our cups of coffee and wonder what will happen tomorrow?

Occasionally we hear or experience something that just baffles all accounts of common sense. This week the message hit twice as hard. Okay, I'll admit that I have made my parenting mishaps. I've messed up schedules, forgotten plans, not double checked homework, AND have submitted to weekly frozen pizza nights... justifying all food groups represented in just one convenient slice... I admit it. I'm also laden with the guilt that goes along with it all and try again to encourage my family to actually USE the calendar, sign the homework notebook and plan healthy, non-guilt filled meals.

I've submitted to the fact that as parents we generally do the best we can to raise our kids in a healthy safe environment. We want to offer them the world of options while still maintaining some degree of personal sanity ourselves. We've all heard it from the day we brought the baby home. It's a balancing act.

Yesterday, however, I found our balance is off. Several, none of my business, conversations were taking place with some mothers whose children, 16 & 17 year olds, had found some trouble. One commented that her 'kid is old enough to know better and that it's not her problem anymore.' Another said that she gave up long ago. The third child's parents never showed up.

I did a check of my equilibrium as I budded into the conversation, questioning their parental accountability.

Hey, I get it. It's tough sometimes. But does that mean we just quit when our children begin walking down paths we don't like? That is exactly the time our kids need us the most. We need to lead by example and show our children that even though our world sometimes presents itself to be tough, we need to make some tough, healthy choices. If we need help, it's a sign of strength, not weakness, to ask for it. If we can't provide the help our kids need, we help them find it. There are some great resources out there with our schools, government, doctors, churches, and neighborhoods.

So as I'm contemplating at which point it would take a parent to 'give up' on their child, thinking it must be after that parent has really experienced some difficult things with that child, I find this:

Can you feel the wind changing?

Today I woke up to the sound of my wind chimes. The breeze had cooled a bit as I snuggled deeper into my comforter.

Isn't August suppose to be the warmest month of the year? What are all the Al Gore(ian) global warning supporters saying about that?

So I get up and make my coffee. Regretfully my friends at The Steaming Cup aren't making it for me today, and I sort my recyclables as it brews. Coffee compost, paper filter, coffee tin. (I'm doing my part)
Sitting on the deck with my organic blanket, feeling the warm fuzzies as I sip my coffee listening to the wind chimes and observing the humming birds feeding off of my, now in bloom, Purple Coneflowers and Monarda. I hear the hummmm of a bee as is visits this beautiful flower, that I can't remember the name to. It's so lovely... but chilly.

It's easy to want to stay secluded amidst the natural sounds of summer. I know, however, that soon, at around 1ish, those prone to late night partying will rise, although not shine, and fill their surroundings with loud beats and rhythms. The language will most likely be offensive, not to mention the smell... according to those of us who tend to be sensitive to that sort of thing...

Alas... I have a few hours to enjoy my solice. Take another sip of coffee, feel the warmth of the sun on my shoulders, admire the beauty of my little piece of natural art surrounding me, and enjoy the songs of the crickets, birds and insects. For soon the winds will change.

Welcome to Blog Waukesha!

I've lived in Waukesha nearly my whole life.

Watched Priedeman estates develop from the farm which paved our pathway from Banting and Horning towards the grocery and pharmacy, now Westbrook, into a subdivision.

Remember when Frame Park was known as the Rocket-ship slide park (according to us kids) and only offered a peaceful nature walk, not colorful equipment, cushioned safety flooring, nor the path to the OTHER SIDE! (who knew?)

We had twinkle top cones at Boy Blue, rode our bikes to Minooca, got a $0.15 candy bar at the Stop-n-go, and belonged to the kids club at Lumz... used to be right next to Sambows... Remember that???

Waukesha is and has been my home. I was raised here and I am raising my children here. As much as I have seen residential and commercial Waukesha grow and develop, I have seen the integrity of my community also grow and develop.

So Waukesha, let's talk about it!
